Turn-based battles, except everyone involved is airborne. Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire takes the familiar JRPG combat menu and moves it into open sky, where you choose attacks for a crew of sky pirates trading fire mid-flight and rework the plan as each fight shifts under you. Glenn Windwalker is the captain, and the rag-tag party he pulls together is fighting an outfit called the Alliance while working through a story about the search for purpose. Between dogfights there is a ship to run: departments to expand, resources to stretch, new special moves to unlock for the people flying them. Towns hand you local problems, and sorting them out earns you support rather than treasure. Loyalty, not loot. The Ghibli-inspired art carries a lot of the feeling here, and it mostly holds up its end.
